Those We Leave Behind

Today, I'm going to ask you if you'll join me levelling an alt without boosting it automatically to 90.

This isn't a reaction to the decision made by Blizzard to offer the paid service. It's also not meant as a means to belittle or indeed deride anyone who has. What it IS meant as is a distinct means of reminding everyone, in what will soon be the Tenth Year of Warcraft, of where we all began, and what the game came from: the Old World of Questing, exploring and generally not screaming headlong straight to Endgame. On the way I hope to gain some new friends, share some posts from other Bloggers about their experiences, and generally rediscover a love for the journey, and not simply the destination.

Let me tell you how I hope this will work.

You've already met :D

This was the toon I created for Hunter Week last year, and who has been stuck at L17 ever since. I could, if I wanted, use my free boost to get her to 90 but as I'm strapped for cash, I'm going to level her the old-fashioned way. I doubt I'll head into a Dungeon because the Heirlooms will make the world XP more than adequate to get by. My gear will come just from rewards and drops. And I intend to slog it through every zone between here and the Shrine with just my mount and my knowledge of Warcraft to guide me. I'd love you to join me in this adventure, and more importantly I'm asking people to write about their experiences, and I'll be looking to share them as Guest Posts in the weeks that follow.

Yes, this is also a thinly-veiled request to ask people to help keep content on my pages until the Expansion finally arrives. Let's not be under any illusions here, it is really tough finding new stuff to write about on a daily basis and with no indication when the beta will appear... I want to keep the site running, and NOT be one of those people who vanishes because there's nothing 'important' going on in game. Yes, there may be distractions here and there (see the post coming up later on Hearthstone) but this is a place for World of Warcraft, and long may it continue.

So, if you're interested in taking part in this exercise, please use the Comments to tell me what character you'll be levelling, and if you'd be interested in contributing a post or posts to my site documenting your journey. If you wish to show your support for the exercise, there's a button here for you too:

So, having asked the question, now I wait.

Anyone up for an adventure?

I like this idea a lot! And as I've plenty of alts that will be leveled the old fashioned way, aside from the one getting the boost. I think I'll take part in this. I'll be leveling several, but I think my poster boy for this will be Saelindir. As long as blood elves are welcome that is.;) He's a holy priest and I don't have any priests at all anywhere near 90 yet so leveling will be a learning experience. (Which is yet another reason I wouldn't want him to bypass it.)
I don't know if I could make a post worth reading but if you run short I'd be willing to give it a try. :)

I have lvl5 human monk who has just been sitting in Goldshire on Stormrage US since I created her for the name: Dahnica. I'd love to share my experiences in lvling her! She's the lowest lvl alt I have and the last class to begin the trek to 90. Aside from my shaman who will benefit from the free boost when the hubby and I have the funds to get our pre-orders, I have other toons I'll be lvling in similar fashion. I'd love to contribute my words if/when you might need them.

Hit me up on Twitter! ^_^

I started leveling a warrior yesterday, she's level 8. :) So I will indeed join in on that part! As for the writing part, I'm afraid I can't. Short comments and tweets are my limit these days. Have fun with your lowbies everyone!

I'm already on this wagon, with 9 new-ish characters heralding my fresh start on a new server. One of them will be used to learn2PvP, the others levelling the good old fashioned way. I rarely go into dungeons anyway (and as a consequence, my gear suffers by comparison so I suck when I do) because I prefer questing out in the world. Some people call this boring and it's all about the end-game for them, and I have no problem with that. I can't say I understand it, though - world exploring is what drew me to the world of fantasy/RPG/MMOs in the first place, and the sheer variety of things to do out there (as opposed to running a raid over and over again) is what keeps me engaged.

Good luck on your journey - if I bump into you I'll throw you a buff :)

Over the Christmas holidays I finally got round to rolling a Panadaren Monk, using one of the names I reserved back when Mists was announced.

Hongkongfuey (for 'tis his name) is currently in the 20s and will definitely not be auto-boosted to 90 as he's quite fun to potter about with.

I started a Male Tauren Warrior the other day with the intent of leveling him to 60 before using my free boost on him, to get the professions bonus. I haven't sent him any heirlooms yet, and I've been considering leveling him completely without heirlooms and without running any dungeons, doing it all the slow-and-steady questing way. I'd thus be using only quest rewards and drops for his gear. If you don't mind that I *do* plan to boost him sometime after he dings 60, I'd be happy to write something about his experiences for you.

I planned on getting one more toon to 90 before we go to Draenor, so this is an excellent excuse to do so. You'll hear from me again! :D

Funny... I have two characters on a new server at level 1, just waiting for the server merge that has been announced but postponed for the last two months. They were specifically created to level "the old-fashioned way" so they can help me level my personal Guild XP.

And so it begins.

I dont have a Warlock, Enchanter or Human at 90. Put them together you get Synalon my new lvl 1 warlock. Who will be levelling without 'looms. Also she likes swords.

Wait, wasn't your hunter appreciation week toon a Troll? So what is that Draenei doing ther? Or did you make more than one toon? :)

That said, I'll probably pass this round - after having leveled 28 toons to 90, and several still in the works, I'm not entirely in the mood for creating a new one now (undoubtedly I will make new toons in WoD though :))

I am super 100% down with this plan. And it gives me some drive to get back to my project! Levelling a gnome on a Horde-heavy non-PvP server while PvP flagged, just to see how many people give in to the urge to kill me. ;)

So! I'll be levelling my gnome warrior Fizzletwisp on Area 52 (US)! I will also so totes write a bit for you - I'm thinking of setting up my own blog to chronicle it, but guest posts on yours are A+ for sure yes if you want me. (I miss WoW blogging, it's been ages since I did it regularly)

@Fizzletwisp That's a hilarious project. xD

I have recently started another Ironman toon. Previous made it to 24 and 43 and died to inattention. It just seems like something to do.

Your call has been answered. Let's see what my readers want me to level :)

I would love to level a new toon by doing... all those old (and less old) dungeons again. :) Even the attunement quest lines! :P

I actually started levelling a character from ground up a few days ago, with the intent of getting my second (yup) loremaster - this time Alliance side. Really want to see how Pandaria looks like through the eyes of opposing faction (and sad that i'm late for 5.3 content that's gone). Hardest part was finding a nice new guild and server on the opposite side, but once that was done - I roll! I was supposed to do only quests but I started to distract myself with a few BGs here and there being a PvP lover, hope that's not against the rules. I'd still do all the zones and every quest in them (not just the amount for achievement, because that's not the point!). I also plan to solo the dungeons and raids, at least the easier ones.

I started playing the game late Cata, so it's not exactly a celebration of 10th year of Warcraft for me, haven't been around during those glory days... But that makes the whole experience all the more fresh for me :)

As for writing, I always wanted to do something like that... Planned to, but in a more distanced future: wanted first to upgrade PC and then do it in video format. But maybe, why not just write something now?

The character I'm leveling is a Draenei Enhancement Shaman (currently lvl 25). Already done the BC 1-20 starting zones and Westfall.

I'm in for sure. I'll be making a Horde character, not quite sure what race/class yet.

I would love to write some guest posts.

@Laeleiweyn Isn't it though? I was hearing stuff about people complaining about getting killed on PvP servers and then somehow that led to me wondering how many non-PvP-server players would, given the chance, have a go at a little gnome running through the world with a pvp flag?

I'm already up to one death at level 10, but that's mostly because i accidentally got skirted by a skirmish in Ironforge and got hit by some AoE.

I have tonnes of lowbie characters that I am intending to continue leveling the old fashioned way. I haven't pre-ordered WoD yet as I have no idea what to do with the boost. I love leveling my characters even if it does take me forever as I have very few heirlooms and I dordle about. Boosting to 90 would lose all that :S I think if anything I'd use my boost on a Horde character but then I'd probably rarely play it so it'd be a waste... such decisions!!
