4.3 PTR :: Look Into the Void

Any excuse to recycle a cheap photoshopped graphic...

Void Storage prices have been the subject of some discussion in this household, mostly because of the infeasibly large number of alts we have to accommodate. Therefore, the news that void storage prices have dropped has been met with a general mumble of approval:

Prices will be as follows:

Unlock
- 100g
Deposit - 25g
Withdrawal - Free

There is also news on a subject which will be of interest to all of us who spend a lot of time using (and passing around) BoA items to our families, though it is currently a bit cryptic (I suspect deliberately, in case they can't pull it off.) Here's the statement:

In short, (they) agree that the process of mailing heirlooms around constantly is a little annoying. We'd prefer to try and work ourselves away from the method of mailing out BoA items in the future, like pets, mounts, etc. To that end, we have some design goals in mind that would improve this sort of item distribution system. And with those design goals have come some ideas for changing heirloom mechanics.

I find myself wondering how this would work, and I'm going to speculate that it ties in with Void Storage. I can imagine a time where every 'account' will have it's own central storage system, which will extend across any realm that you happen to play on. Into your 'Account Bank' Blizzard will deposit any BoA pets you might buy from the Blizzard store or any Achievement Pet you may be awarded. This means if you had an alt on a new server that you wanted to level fast but the Heirlooms on another server all you'd have to do is stick them into your Account Bank and anyone could access them, assuming they were on your account to begin with. The bare bones of this system is going to be in place in Diablo 3: if a caster item drops while you're playing your Barbarian you can simply drop the item into your Bank and any of your other caster characters can pick it up. I cannot think it would be too much of a leap to make this happen.

I can only hope that this system might make Blizzard rethink how it gives out Soulbound pets from World Events and maybe, just MAYBE it will allow you to take a soulbound pet that you already have on one character and give it to someone who hasn't... ^^ Yes, I know it's a bit of a leap but if they're considering changing stuff's availabilty... I can but hope.

I do agree that the whole soulbound mounts / pets thing was probably more by accident than original design.

When the system for such items was conceived did Blizz really envisage the proliferation of alts etc. that would happen? Let's face it, there is no way they could have predicted how successful this game would be or how altaholic some peeps would become (looking v. hard at a certain blog writer here...)!

When you think of the status quo in WOW now, with many players having a 'family' of toons, it would make a lot of sense that such a family should be able to share resources around like this.

If my son needs my car to go to the shop I let him borrow it (slightly reluctantly, but I do). Why shouldn't my alt lock be able to borrow my main's Traveller's Tundra Mammoth to travel (or pose around Stormwind) on?!

Let's hope that Blizz can use the time spent not re-coding the Troll HCs to implement this!
